This project consists of a directional interchange connecting Interstates 20 and 55 and U.S. 49 in a complex plan requiring mostly night and weekend work. More than five miles of the three major highway arteries were reconstructed during this phase of the project. A major part of the construction ncludes the addition of a new flyover bridge linking motorists traveling U. S. 49 North to either I-20 West or I-55 North without having to merge.
Specific items of work for this project include: seven bridges that are steel span and concrete girder span with approximately 19,000 cubic yards of structure concrete along with 91,000 linear feet of concrete piling; 800,000 plus cubic yards borrow excavation; approximately 90,000 square yards of concrete pavement; 150,000 plus tons of asphalt pavement and approximately two miles of drainage structure.
A retaining wall was added to this project. HBC worked with MDOT to reduce the cost of the wall by using a reinforced earth wall. This not only saved MDOT money, but added to the flexibility to accommodate lane shifts and stages of bridge work.
Hill Brothers was awarded this project December 10, 2002. Construction began in mid-March. Completion of Phase III will allow MDOT to handle traffic much more efficiently.
Due to the retaining wall and other change orders, the time was extended and the contract amount was increased by over $3 million.
