General Site Maintenance

  • Know and obey all signed restrictions on-site;
  • Access sites only through approved roads;
  • Stay within approved work limits;
  • Conduct good housekeeping at all work locations (e.g., do not litter);
  • No open burning. Prevent and report all fires; and
  • Smoke only in designated areas.
  • Protection of Sensitive Resources
  • Work only within approved site limits and maintain buffers along designated sensitive areas;
  • If bird nests are present onsite, work can only be performed in accordance with permit conditions;
  • Do not store hazardous materials (e.g., fuels, paints, solvents), park heavy equipment, or stockpile soil and construction materials near or within wetlands and streams;
  • Do not drain water into or out of wetlands or stream channels; and
  • Do not refuel equipment and vehicles within 100 feet of a stream channel or wetland.

Erosion Control

  • Assess site conditions and erosion control requirements prior to starting work;
  • Install and maintain all necessary erosion/sediment control measures while working in area; and
  • Report non-functioning erosion control measures as soon as possible.

Unanticipated Discoveries

  • Stop work immediately if archeological artifacts, contaminated soils, containers, pipes, tanks, etc. are discovered/uncovered;
  • Do not remove, stockpile, or otherwise further disturb archeological artifacts or potentially contaminated materials; and
  • Immediately notify your supervisor and wait for specific instructions prior to proceeding with work activities in the area.

Hazardous Material/Waste Handling

  • Know the hazards associated with common hazardous substances prior to using them;
  • Common hazardous materials include fuel oil, lubricants (oils), antifreeze, paints, solvents, grouting compounds, acids, and caustics;
  • Always keep containers closed when not in use to minimize spilling and contamination of usable product;
  • Never dispose of containers in dumpsters unless containers are empty;
  • Talk to supervisor about proper disposal methods prior to generating waste; and
  • Take responsibility for confirming that waste is moved to appropriate temporary storage area(s).

Spills Prevention and Response

  • Store hazardous materials (e.g., fuel, hydraulic and lubricating oils, paints, solvents) only in approved containers with tight fitting lids;
  • Do not leave metal containers in direct contact with ground for extended periods (e.g., raise off ground on wood and/or underlay with plastic tarp);
  • Report all spills to your supervisor; and
  • Immediately prevent further spillage and contain a spill, if it can be done safely.
