"Stay Committed" - by CEO Kenny Hill |
 |
There is no doubt that summer has arrived; our Southeastern humidity is tough! Let’s all stay aware of the dangers associated with the extreme temperatures that we’re dealing with and make sure our jobs are supplied with plenty of liquids and our employees stay hydrated. We’ve celebrated several Safety luncheons on numerous jobs in the past couple of months and everyone seems to be proactive and on board with the HBCC Safety Program. We need to continue with this effort and not let up; veterans, we are depending on you to mentor our less experienced employees.
At this current time HBCC has a strong backlog with work in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and several jobs in Mississippi. Our Engineering/Estimating staff continue to bid jobs in all states that I’ve listed and word has it that the COE in New Orleans District area will post several larger jobs in the future, so HBCC will train its sights on this part of Louisiana.
Switching over to the equipment side of things, I would like to mention that HBCC just completed the sale of 75 older units, which included excavators, dozers, cranes and backhoes, etc. The sale was successful due to the hard work around the shops and several manhours from the home office and our auctioneer, Yoder & Frey. They did a great job making sure we had everything in place. The sale of these units will provide more room on our yards and allow us to continue to update our fleet and maintain the best of operators.
And last, but not least, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful 4th of July. Let’s all take the time be thankful for the freedom our ancestors have provided, and to pray for our country and our leaders. We are truly, very blessed. Have a great weekend!
Thank you for your time and hard work; and remember always, Safety First!

| Ethics Quick Check Test |
Consistently making ethical choices on the job is difficult.
It requires you to balance many-often competing-interests.
Here are some questions you should ask yourself about any
potential course of action whenever you are faced with a conflict of interest or an ethical dilemma:
- Does what I purpose to do comply with the company’s policies and procedures?
- Would this course of action violate any laws or regulations?
- Do I need to discuss this problem with my boss and get his/her approval?
- What have others in the organization done in similar situations in the past and how has that turned out?
- Will my decision be fair to everyone who will be affected by it, now and in the future?
- Is this decision in the best interests of the organization, employees, customers, vendors, and the community?
- Am I under any pressure to make a decision with which I’m
not comfortable? Where is that pressure coming from?
- Would someone I particularly respect agree with my decision?
- Would my family support my decision?
- Can I take pride in my decision?
When you have to make a decision in a hurry and don’t have time for a lot of reflection, ask yourself this simple question: Would I be comfortable seeing a report of what I’m proposing to do in the morning paper for all to see, including my boss, my employees, and my family? If the answer is no, reconsider you decision-it probably isn’t ethical.

| Safety Update |
With summer here, we all know what comes along with it – HEAT and HUMIDITY! Research has proven that temperatures greater than a person’s normal skin temperature causes mental fatigue and physical exhaustion. A recent study by NASA concluded that when the temperature reaches 95° F for an extended period of time, people make 60 mistakes per hour – without realizing it. (Safety & Health Magazine)
A few things we can do to protect ourselves from overheating include: drink plenty of water, take breaks when needed, wear light colored clothing and know the signs of heat illnesses. Let’s all pay attention to what we’re doing and watch out for each other. With these tips in mind, we can all have a productive and accident free summer!

| Employee of the Month / Core Values Champion |
 |
Often we fail to consider how we come across to the people we work with. If we are having a bad day, we may unconsciously convey that to our co-workers or a visitor who may be visiting the office. However, there is one employee I have observed that no matter who he speaks or interacts with, he always wears a smile, carries a positive attitude and is pleasant, friendly and courteous. It’s often contagious!! I think it says a lot about this person when he can be described with so many positive traits. His job includes fixing problems of others and trying to accommodate everyone’s needs as timely as possible. This employee is dependable above all else. When he tells you he will get it done, you know it will be done and you will get what you asked for. When an employee can display the character described above along with the HBCC Core Values of Quality, Integrity and Teamwork, he definitely deserves being nominated for “Employee of the Month/Core Value Champion.” I am nominating John Kirk for this award for the manner in which he carries out his duties in maintenance of vehicles, ordering parts, making body repairs, etc. on numerous automobiles for HBCC personnel. Thanks John for a Job Well Done!!
