Workplace Values

Build Trust, Credibility, and Respect Through Listening.
Excellent listening skills and the ability to persuade others to your way of thinking makes the difference between good and great teams. Good listening builds trust, credibility, and respect.

Here are some Tips for Better Listening:

When face to face with the speaker:

  • Clear your mind of other thoughts.
  • Give the speaker your full attention.
  • Make eye contact with the speaker.
  • Assume the speaker will say something worth hearing.
  • Pay attention; don’t show boredom, impatience, hostility, etc.
  • Nod, smile, or do something to indicate you understand the speaker.

When on the phone with the speaker:

  • Visualize the speaker in your mind.
  • Give the speaker your attention.
  • Jot down brief notes to help you remember.
  • Say “something” to indicate you are paying attention.

 Whenever anyone is speaking:

  • Don’t interrupt.
  • Try to determine the speaker’s key message.
  • Don’t do or think about something else.
  • Wait until the speaker has finished to give your response.
  • Ask questions about anything that’s unclear.
  • Repeat key points of the speaker’s message to be sure you understand.

Safety Update

I would like to start off by congratulating the TDOT Memphis Retrofit Project for their housekeeping and organized project. For many that have not seen this project, it is confined and crowed with lots of employees, supplies and equipment. When visiting the project, everyone comments as to how clean the job is. So hats off to everyone working on this job!

Being the middle of June, we have already been subjected to “Dog Days of Summer” heat. Everyone seems to be adjusting fairly well and moving some work schedules to combat the hottest times of the day. Remember a few tips: stay hydrated (water), avoid caffeine, wear loose fitting clothing, and know the signs of heat stress.

Otha

Employee of the Month

Otha Williams has been employed with Hill Brothers Construction for 14 years.  He began as a laborer and has worked his way up to Bridge Supervisor, all due to a good work ethic and always doing whatever you asked him to do.

Otha is a very loyal employee with a great attitude and an easy, outgoing personality.  If you really want to see Otha’s big, genuine smile, just mention his son who played ball for Falkner High School – when not at work that’s where you would find Otha - at a ballgame watching his son play. He is a very proud father, too.

Otha is an individual that gets the job done and it is because of all these attributes, that he has gained tremendous respect from his crew as well as his company co-workers.  I nominate Otha Williams as HBCC Core Value Champion/Employee of the Month.
