Message From CEO

Wow! Hill Brothers lands another project.  (Somewhat closer than 1,550 miles, though.) Congratulations to the Hill Brothers team for being very competitive on a sizable MDOT project located in New Albany, MS this week, approximately 30 miles from our home office.  Great job everyone!

Let’s move on and I’ll take this opportunity to bring everyone up to speed with what’s been happening in and around HBCC. The management group has been doing quite a bit of traveling the last few months, with all the work going on in Wyoming, North Dakota and Montana. These projects are scheduled for completion by the end of November.  A sincere “thank-you” for the group of men and women who spent many weeks and long hours far from home.

Moving on southeastward through Arkansas, you should know that the White River has dropped and our crews are running full blast, building structures and laying asphalt. If the river stays low, we should get a lot accomplished in the remainder of the year.

Once you cross the Mississippi River, you’re likely to see more construction signs ahead. Our work on the I-40 Retrofit project is progressing very well. Located next to the Memphis Pyramid, this project has a tight schedule. We’ll work all winter long due to the fact that the project is completely accessible on asphalt or concrete.

Moving on to Collierville, Rossville and Maury County, TN, you’ll see that bridges are being built and box culverts are being completed for roadways and tracks that will have traffic on them very soon.

Next month we’ll spotlight Mississippi and our Louisiana projects.

Thanks and Be Safe!

Kenny

Workplace Values

"Act as if what you do makes a difference.  It does.” – William James

The integrity of our business is being judged every day and all day long on the basis of everyone’s behavior, from the person answering the phone all the way up through senior management.  Because of this, ethics and values really do matter.  Positive or negative, your behavior sets the tone for everyone you come into contact with each day.  It’s important to model appropriate values and behavior all day, every day.

You may have faced moments when you want nothing more than to react loudly when someone pushes your buttons. Taking the high road will keep the peace.   It’s always worth it, regardless of the destination and cost, and yes, sometimes it will not be easy but in the end, it’s the best way to handle conflict and maintain your own moral high ground.

Safety Update

How To Protect Yourself During Flu Season

-  Get a Vaccination, the most important way to prevent spread of the flu.
-  Stay at home if you are sick. The HHS/CDC recommends that workers who have a fever and respiratory symptoms stay at home until 24 hours after their fever ends (100 degrees Fahrenheit [37.8 degrees Celsius] or lower), without the use of medication. Not everyone who has the flu will have a fever. Other symptoms could include a runny nose, body aches, headache, tiredness, diarrhea, or vomiting.
-  Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds; use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are not available.
-  Avoid touching your nose, mouth, and eyes.
-  Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, or cough and sneeze into your upper sleeve(s). Throw tissues into a "no-touch" wastebasket.
-  Clean your hands after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
-  Keep frequently touched common surfaces (e.g., telephones, computer equipment, etc.) clean.
-  Try not to use a coworker's phone, desk, office, computer, or other work tools and equipment. If you must use a coworker’s equipment, consider cleaning it first with a disinfectant.
-  Avoid shaking hands or coming in close contact with coworkers and others who may be ill.
-  Stay in shape. Eat a healthy diet. Get plenty of rest, exercise, and relaxation.
-  Speak with your doctor and find out if you are in a high risk category for seasonal flu (e.g., pregnant women, persons with asthma, etc.).

Employee of the Month

I would like to nominate Adam Green as HBCC Employee of the Month / Core Value Champion. Adam is one of Hill Brothers’ best finish operators. He is the type of guy who can and will do whatever is needed from finishing slopes on a dozer, finishing grade on a motor grader, and even mowing when it's needed as shown in the photograph.

Adam always has the same attitude about work – “Get it finished and do it as quickly as possible.”  I not only enjoy working with Adam, but am proud to call him a friend.
